In India there is no shortage of projects for TGU volunteers, many of which do not necessarily fall into the categories of Health, Education, Environment, or Arts & Culture. For groups of volunteers coming to India through churches, schools, colleges, or community organizations, TGU can arrange special projects to utilize the ‘manpower’ over a short duration. This can include projects such as repairing roofs, painting schools and homes, building outdoor toilets, and numerous other programs.
Blind students and those with handicaps are often from poor families and face many hurdles. Not only economic, but a marginalization by society. Sometimes, those with disabilities are cast out of society. Simply spending time learning about their situation and sharing the background of a TGU volunteer can have a lasting human impact.
An interesting project is working with animals, specifically the thousands of street dogs that fight for control of Indian streets and scavenge for food through society’s trash. TGU has in its network, NGO’s dedicated to ‘Man’s Best Friend’ by treating sick and injured animals, rehabilitating them, collecting donations of food and milk, as well as educating the public against violence towards animals.
Social service is about giving back to the community. It doesn’t require knowledge in a specific field or even experience. With proper guidance and organization, TGU can work with volunteer or volunteer groups to develop custom made humanitarian projects.
