ARTS & CULTURE

Sample Projects:
  • Making & Designing Hand Made Greeting Cards
  • Designing & Marketing Village/ Ethnic Handicrafts
  • Teaching Art, Music, Drama Or Dance to Children
  • Developing and/ or Organizing Street Plays
  • Researching & Producing a Short Documentary
  • Creating Dialogue around Eastern & Western culture through Bollywood & Hollywood films
There is no shortage of art & culture in Indian society. Music, Song, & Dance are all a great part of the fabric of Indian culture. There are huge, elaborate festivals all throughout the year. Song & Dance are a central part of the Hindi cinematic language. Each state and each region within India has its own unique culture which exemplifies itself through various artistic styles.

A TGU volunteer with a professional background in the creative arts or merely as a hobby can contribute to local societies in numerous areas. As an alternative to working on the streets in activities such as selling acid cleaning supplies and shoe shining, which can be abusive jobs; teenagers at one project NGO are provided the opportunity to make a variety of hand made greeting cards, which allow them to earn income and work in a safe environment.

Kids growing up in poor and disadvantaged communities in India often times have very little access to the arts; moreover, their schools do not offer any enrichment programs. Spending a few hours each day teaching an artistic skill can open a world of imagination. Working with local talent within slum communities, street plays can be created and performed at local schools and local audiences, even in a short time.

For a TGU volunteer interested in a more advanced project that explores culture, various social and ethnic communities can be brought together to screen selected films from Hollywood & Bollywood; or films specific to the volunteers home country. These windows into culture can be analyzed, debated, and discussed with relevance to current global issues.

Something as simple as taking a group of disadvantaged children on a field trip to see the latest Hindi film blockbuster can be an experience never forgotten.
