Making a Difference

"The world will never have lasting peace so long as men reserve for war the finest human qualities. Peace, no less than war, requires idealism and self-sacrifice and a righteous and dynamic faith."

HEALTH

Sample Projects:
  • Distribution of Medicine (Malaria Pills)
  • Visit to Local Hospitals; Spending time with Patients
  • Hygiene Project (Trimming Nails, Applying Band-Aides to kids from slums)
  • Helping to Run Local Health Fares or Clinics
  • Assisting in traditional Ayurvedic medical care
Quality health care is another area for which many people in Western societies take for granted. Western nations generally have world class medical facilities, experts in every medical specialty, and access to the latest technology.

In India there are two streams of medical practice; Western style medicine and Eastern style Ayurvedic medicine. Compared to the West, both medicines and medical care are very cheap in India; moreover, in India there is no shortage of qualified medical doctors. Becoming a doctor is one of the ‘prized’ professions and a career track many parents suggest their children follow. However, when you are living in poverty, medical care, even the most basic, is a struggle because those people simply cannot afford it.

In slum communities, children walk around barefoot with cuts and scrapes on their feet, legs, and arms. They can’t afford a band-aid. In rural villages, a woman suffering from a basic skin allergy has to endure itching and scratching because she cannot afford to take a bus to the nearest town, see a doctor, and buy some medicine.

While there are obvious types of disease and serious medical ailments afflicting people, a TGU volunteer is able to utilize their time and energy in dealing with the small scale medical problems. For those volunteers who are medical professionals, TGU can customize the program to more affectively utilize professional skills.
